چکیده

Hearing aids are not a one-size-fits-all solution to hearing problems; they must be uniquely tuned for each wearer. There are currently no low-cost and/or effective methods for in situ tuning. This paper describes a microelectromechanical-systems MEMS -based dual omnidirectional microphone that can be tuned by growing metallic nanostructures. The nanostructures are grown on integrated solid electrolyte layers on a suspended parylene diaphragm using an external bias and tune the MEMS microphones in situ thereby limiting mismatch. In our tests, this tuning improved the directivity index from 3.5 fair directionality to 4.6 dB excellent directionality in normal room temperature operating environments. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. Speech recognition in noise using bilateral open-fit hearing aids: the limited benefit of directional microphones and noise reduction.

OBJECTIVE To investigate speech recognition performance in noise with bilateral open-fit hearing aids and as reference also with closed earmolds, in omnidirectional mode, directional mode, and directional mode in conjunction with noise reduction. DESIGN A within-subject design with repeated measures across conditions was used. Speech recognition thresholds in noise were obtained for the diffe...

Effect of type of noise and loudspeaker array on the performance of omnidirectional and directional microphones.

Differences in performance between omnidirectional and directional microphones were evaluated between two loudspeaker conditions (single loudspeaker at 180 degrees; diffuse using eight loudspeakers set 45 degrees apart) and two types of noise (steady-state HINT noise; R-Space restaurant noise). Twenty-five participants were fit bilaterally with Phonak Perseo hearing aids using the manufacturer'...

Comparison of Benefits Provided by Various Hearing Aid Technologies in Older Adults

This article presents two different sets of data comparing the outcomes measured with different hearing aid technologies. In the first data set, performance on a fairly comprehensive core battery of hearing-aid outcome measures was obtained for five different technologies, ranging from analog single-channel linear in-theear devices with output-limiting compression and omnidirectional microphone...

Evaluation of a second-order directional microphone hearing aid: I. Speech perception outcomes.

This clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate the benefit obtained from hearing aids employing second-order adaptive directional microphone technology, used in conjunction with digital noise reduction. Data were collected for 49 subjects across two sites. New and experienced hearing aid users were fit bilaterally with behind-the-ear hearing aids using the National Acoustics Laboratory-Nonlinea...

The Effect of Hearing Aid Microphone Mode on Performance in an Auditory Orienting Task

OBJECTIVES Although directional microphones on a hearing aid provide a signal-to-noise ratio benefit in a noisy background, the amount of benefit is dependent on how close the signal of interest is to the front of the user. It is assumed that when the signal of interest is off-axis, users can reorient themselves to the signal to make use of the directional microphones to improve signal-to-noise...
